By the way. something else I want to add as an aside to the Tele w/ humbuckers comment above... (which I partially agree with, by the way...)
One of the BEST Tele sounds is a P-90 in the neck position, coupled with the standard Tele style bridge pickup. I know it's not purist, but man... until you've heard it, you're missing something...
Scott. strat in the mid/rear position is still quite a bit different than a Tele. One of the things that makes a Tele do what it does is the pairing of the pickup to the bridge, with the steel bottom "reflector" plate on the bottom of the bridge pickup,. It redirects the magnetic field. Even a strat with a similar plate won't quite do it... so it's a combination of the mounting and steel plate.
