The bolt open devise is built into all versions of the rifle but it's disabled by removing one part. (from memory)
It's a very simple device that is engaged by the floor of the bullet shelf of the magazine when the last round is fired.
What we did is load a tracer round second to last so we knew when the last round was in the chamber.
Worked beautifully. It was a standard thing in Vietnam.
