I have good quality hand scraped engineered floors over most of the first floor of my home - including the kitchen. They have been in for 7 years and so far no problems. Yes they have dings and things from dropped stuff but being that they were hand scraped it all just adds to the character. So in this regard wood can exist comfortably in the kitchen as long as you pick the right stuff. I would never install a plastic laminate or a show room finish like maple in the kitchen. As with most jobs like this preparation and quality materials is CRITICAL. Before the wood went in I had the floors scrubbed clean, leveled, and I used the best wood glue you can buy - Bostik's best.

I love my wood floors. We are a family who loves to walk barefoot or in socks. The wood floors feel fantastic all season long. In my bathrooms I have 18" travertine which is a classic look that will last forever. It sucks to walk on though.
