the tranny is the biggie - the 901/911 trans. is much nicer than the new-fangled 915 UNLESS you are doing a lot of driving in heavy traffic (gridlock), where the straight 1-2 shift of the 915 would be best
of course, if you are stuck in gridlock all the time, why would you be in a 911? indeed, why be in a car at all...
the E will have higher compression than the 2.4L also
the adv. of the '72 is the oil door - you could modify it to alter the oil fill - I keep thinking about doing that on my '73
