I was a GE appliance repairman in that era. All the major appliances were made in the USA and were pretty good. My biggest complaint about them was the clunky clamshell timer on the washing machines and the slip-on connectors used in the dryers and ranges. They used slip-on connectors that overheated and burned away, either at the wire or at the terminal. Sometimes they would take a terminal board with them. It was an easy fix for the repairman, but given the huge number of repairs required over the years I was disappointed that GE never did anything to correct it. Someone brought it up in a tech class once and a couple of techs shushhed him - told him how much money they make on those easy service runs and how much they'd lose if GE fixed the problem.
