I don't think success has anything, really, to do with the measure of a man.

I think it has much more to do with integrity. Honesty. Is he a man of his word?
Does he use people to get what he wants, backstabbing his way up the chain? Or does he get there by perserverence?

As an example, one of my very "fine" competitors was very successful. Sold loads of product, and made a decent product too.... IF you could get them. He ripped off hundreds of people, who paid for, and never received any product at all.

Nope.. "success" doesnt' matter.
