PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
The public relations level of Dallas Mavericks forward Josh Howard probably can't fall any further.
This is after his latest episode, caught on YouTube, where he defends his right not to celebrate the National Anthem with this comment: " 'The Star-Spangled Banner' is going on. I don't celebrate this [expletive]. I'm black."
According to this article in The Dallas Morning News, the episode took place in July when Howard and several other celebrities were about to participate at Allen Iverson's charity flag football game. And since Howard's comments were posted on YouTube on Tuesday, blogs, sports radio and TV shows have been inundated with comments.
For many, it wasn't what Howard said, because there have been Americans who refused to observe the anthem. It was more about his delivery and tact.
And there were others who were insulted and disappointed by Howard's dismissive words, as reported in this article on ESPN.com. The article also includes the YouTube clip.
Mavericks owner Mark Cuban told The Fort Worth Star-Telegram that he still supports his player despite the comments. Cuban said the organization will educate its players about behavior in a world filled with cell phone cameras.
Howard's plunge into the "what was he thinking?" category is nothing new. In April, before Game 3 of his team's playoff series against New Orleans , Howard told the media that he used marijuana during the NBA offseason.
He threw his colleagues under the bus when he also said marijuana use is not uncommon among NBA players. Also during those same playoffs, even after a request from then coach Avery Johnson to not go out and party, Howard still held an after-hours birthday bash.
Also in July, Howard was drag racing. He was charged with speeding (94 mph in a 55 mph zone), careless and reckless driving, and speed competition.
It appears that he needs to slow down.
