when i did my clutch the starter was hanging from the wire the whole time, and the wire got a lot of abuse as i shoved it out of the way every ten seconds. still, it is a possibility you damaged the wire inside and increased the resistance. when you say you have checked all your wiring, did this include removing the starter wire contacts and cleaning them well?
