I bartended for about 5 years. I've tried several different Scotches. I'm going to go with "It's an acquired taste." I never managed to acquire it. I've tried single malts, old, you name it. I just can't like the stuff.
I once put a tiny amount in several glasses at work and tried them all (including an Irish Whiskey or two). I believe there was one Scotch and one Irish whiskey where I thought, "that's not nearly as bad as the others." It was Jameson and, I think, Glenfiddich.
It's just not worth it to me to try really hard to acquire a taste for something that's expensive anyway. I've got enough expensive tastes. I don't need to develop more.
