yes, that's basically what i did. it worked well in some spots, and in others it didn't do all that much. don't overdo the hammering though (small changes in one spot may cause problems somewhere else - so in this case, less is more) and be careful on the parts where the top folds (those spots may be brittle from age). it would also help to warm up the top first; a rubber hammer and an ice cold top don't make good friends.
