Yep late fees totally suck. I too this year missed the registration due date on my wife's car...by two days. I plead my case to the lady on the phone and lucked out to only pay the original fee.

Look at it this way. How much do the folks in TX and AZ pay for air conditioning each year? Sorta makes your extra $200 fee trivial...plus you get to enjoy the mountains, desert, and beach all from the same residence. Perspective!
