Carb'd Ducati 900SS and Monster models from the mid-late 90's are solid, reliable (for the most part) bikes that are fun to ride, not intimidating, and make great sounds. They're also at the bottom of their depreciation curve. You can pick up a very nice example of either for less than $5K.
The great thing is that it's easy to find low-mileage cream puffs because most people only rode them on nice days the odd weekend. I have a 900SS/SP in the "Garage" under my avatar.
