Holy cow, I hadn't expected 4 pages of comments in 24 hours!
My family is from a tiny clan that lived near the Isle of Skye. My father knows that his ancestors claimed the Black Watch tartan, but then, I get the idea that everyone did, so I don't know if my family's claims have any credence. Our battle cry is "For the field of two declivities!" Dorky, but ... that's family history for you.
I can't justify spending the $1K on a real kilt in the family tartan, not for a comfortable substitute for shorts on a summer day. I'm thinking that $200 for a utilikilt is also pretty pricey, but is there a better value in something that's reasonably comfortable, will wear ok commando or not, and won't wear out in a single afternoon?
The fact that ladies dig man-legs is a huge bonus. I run a LOT, so my legs are really quite nice, if I do say so myself. I hate being a normal person, just like everyone else -- just another jeans-wearing boring person, you know? So maybe a kilt is a good answer.
Thanks for all the responses.
