Front plates are required in MN, or so I am told by my family member who are, *ahem*, responsible for enforcing the matter.
I am doing the same as you though, just having moved back to MN from Colorado. Someone wrote in the margin of my DMV book that: front plates for people living out of state, without jobs, are not required.
