Humbled
Happy Memorial Day to ALL,
I just got back from taking car for a stretch after 2 weeks of being dormant which coincided with a sprained right angle. My wife was surprised I could even drive the beast. After a good warm up and 10 miles from the house I was ready for some spirited driving at which time my altenator belt let loose.
I pulled over immediately. Waited about 20 minutes before I started to put a new belt on. I had trouble taking pulley nut off.....did I mentioned that I am still on crutches? I dumped out all the tools and used the pouch to cover the IC area so I wouldn't burn or cut myself. I just couldn't get enough leverage to loosen nut. After 10 minutes of frustration, I realized that I could use the tire tool socket side on the end of the pulley nut removal bar (formed 90 degree) and got enough leverage to loosen it. Got a little rush of adrenaline when it worked. 1 shim got loss in hot engine bay. Blew it off after 5 minutes of looking. I put belt on and all 5 shims on the outside. Will add back 1 shim.
Some of you know that I am a fairly new 930 owner (4 mos). My original PPI showed a old fan belt. About a month ago, I was heading home after a 40 minute drive and I was about 2 blocks from the house and the alternator light came on. Got home and discovered altenator/fan belt broken. Came on the forum and researched removal and replacement. One of the recommendations was to order extra fan belts which I did from our host. More important...pull over! Removal was straight forward except when I removed my pulley there was 3 shims inside and 4 shims outside. So I took 1 shim off since all my research showed 6 max.
Confession>>>> I should have adjusted the belt tension. Belt was doing a riverdance routine on the leftside. I knew it needed adjustment but I thought I would do it next weekend when my ankle was better. She needed attention but I neglected her for a quick thrill...
Thanks to fellow Pelicanites I have gain a little more DIY confidence. I have never paid so much attention to my instrument readings like I have on this beast.....
