i just got a nook and love it. I would probably love a kindle too, but I was given the nook.
I was not able to actually compare the 2. I do find with the nook it is slow to power up from off. However, i generally just put it into "sleep" mode. Also, navigating the web pages is a bit of a pain. That said, you can always search and buy online, and when you turn on the nook, your books are there.
I can read the hell out of books now. I've had it 2 weeks and am on my 5th book.
I have always been a reader. My only hesitation would be getting it for a just finished 5th grader. One of the best parts of reading at that age was looking through libraries and bookstores and finding great books based on the covers and luck. At her age, she should experience that before going all electronic and stuff.
