Yes, it is very screwed up but considering it's from the FAA (or any govt. agency for that matter) probably sheds some light it.
I have a friend who circumvents the system in this way and seems to be just fine with it. I couldn't bring myself to do it. Just for kicks, let's say you have a $500,000 life insurance policy and fly w/ a denied medical in an LSA on your drivers license and you auger in for some reason. I'm betting the insurance company will tell you to kiss off.
