I understand the sentiment except that I wanted my daughter to associate doing a good job with getting a good reward. She didn't get an allowance for things like keeping her room clean but we chose some household chores that were optional and she would get paid for doing them. It creates a work ethic...

I always wondered why anyone needs to understand the concept or do the math without a calculator (heck, I had to learn to use a slide rule!). I realized that "doing the problem" is to be in maintenance mode. When something blows up or, for there to be advancement and breakthroughs, there has to be critical thinking and
that requires understanding.
