I have a friend who's parents had a house in Aspen, CO built Many years ago. Had 5 wood burning fireplaces.
When they sold the house, the guy that bought it tore it down and built a new house with 2 WB fireplaces.
He sold the rights to the other 3 fireplaces for $100k to $150k EACH.
You can't get a permit for a new FP there, but you can use the rights to an old one.

That is insane. Aspen Co. no less. I can't imagine this happening, but yes it does. My BIL just remodeled a house in Cal. built in the early 1900's, and yes, they were told no WB fireplaces.
