I bet the rental shops love him!
Our pilot is down in Louisiana right now. He "gets" to fly our 206 turbo with a brand new engine on it's maiden flight from Lafayette to Baton Rouge. That takes him right across about 60 miles of swamps. I suspect that airplane will get a very careful pre flight. and he will probably start across the swamp after he gets to 12,000 feet.
I think I would want the mechanic along. Not because he could do anything in the air but he would get to bet his life that everything is going to work as designed.
