No problem about the backtracking Graham... those roads were fun enough to do a second time!
Those of us who did the Portland tour in May remember the fun forestry road that led to a dead end due to still being snowed in. I imagine there are lots of forestry roads in Washington that aren't open yet due to snow.
And my guess (from the lack of traffic on Hwy 20), is that leaving Winthrop as late as we did gave us less traffic to deal with. I've never had so much fun on Hwy 20!

1252 miles/ 2014km total trip distance for me. i know some Porsche owners who do that in a year rather than a weekend!
