did you prewarm the stone or right onto the fire with it? i would think that that much heat applied very quickly might cause the stone to fracture. i am often concerned when putting hot pans on my stone bar top that i use as a dinner table that it could crack it as it heats too quickly. i realize you are heating the entire stone so maybe the expansion is consistent, where as my warming a 4x4 foot slab in just one area may be more trouble.
