Thanks Guys--The car is the last of the Audi 80--'96-ex Japan assembled.--2.6 V6----This is my second Avant and the other one did have broken wires in the loom from the body to the rear hatch,so it was the first place I looked.
Further research, I found the correct procedure for rear wiper operation

Press rear wiper sprung switch and the wiper operates once every 6 secs. Press again to stop wiper.--So the delay function is in the relay,it seems.

Press that sprung switch and hold and the washer and wiper operate.
Release and washer stops,wiper runs for 4 secs. ---tricky little relay it seems!
replacement should get here in next couple of days,hope thats the problem!

I had a "friend" test the relay ,but I think he knew less about it than I did.
We dont have a Harbour Freight down here ,but I think I can get a cheap meter
for about ten bucks.---Thanks for the help.
