Are you talking about the trim piece that screws on over the top of the sunroof gears (on a 924S anyway) - it's basically cardboard with vinyl glued onto it? Under that on my car there's a layer of thin vinyl that's glued directly to the car that covers the mechanism (so there's vinyl covering the mechanism, then a trim piece covering that.
The vinyl's peeling off my trim piece - keep meaning to tear it off and just paint the cardboard trim piece black - you don't look at it that closely most of the time, but it does attract attention with vinyl hanging off it.
