After much deliberation, it is time to sell my '71 Porsche 911T Targa. I am encountering a situation in my personal life that requires her to go. I must list this as a driving/project car since I like to take it out for a "spirited" drive in the country on the weekends even though it is a work in progress.
It is approaching 123k miles on the odometer. Engine is the original, matching 2.2l. To my knowledge, neither the engine nor transmission has ever been rebuilt. Carburetors were rebuilt a few years ago when I purchased the car, along with new plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, points, filters (fuel, oil, and air), and transmission oil. All of the cloth-wrapped rubber fuel lines have been replaced in the engine bay. And, the starter has been replaced. I am running Castrol GTX 20W-50 in the engine. The previous owner had a third brake light installed because he felt exposed with the car riding so low. I am the third owner that I know of.
The car has deep 6 Fuchs. The tires have only a couple of thousand miles on them and many more left.
In its current state, I cannot recommend this car as a daily driver; it is loud, does not shift like a modern car (even with new shifter bushings), has a very rigid ride, front end feels vague at speed, and leaves you with the fantastic aroma of a 40 year old air/oil-cooled engine. It does not like to sit in traffic.
The paint is not original, the interior could use some attention, and most would say the targa top could use a recovering (although I've never driven it with the top on in my seven years of ownership!) It has always been garaged.
Compression and/leakdown test: Nope.
Recent valve adjust: Nope.
Fantastic respray: Nope.
Oil-tight underneath: Nope.
Service records going back to ’71: Nope.
Like to start when engine is hot: Nope.
Hydraulic tensioners: Nope.
Original color: 8810-H Gold Metallic.
Current color: some version of Audi grey.
VIN: 9111111486
Engine #: 6116135 (if this doesn’t match, let me know!)
Transmission #: 911/01, 7115483
Popping on deceleration: Yup.
Smoke on starting: Yup.
The new owner will also receive the cover, a bra (never used), any Porsche specific tools in my possession, a stack of books and manuals, and any spare parts I have for this car including the original Bosch starter. I have a new set front brake pads, front brake lines, and brake caliper rebuild kits that I will include.
My hope is that the purchaser of my car will be similar to me in regards to either wanting it for a full restoration or just to tinker on and drive for pleasure. I am selling it out of necessity rather than desire.
I live in Kingman, KS (30 minutes west of Wichita), and since odds are good it will leave this area, we will have to work out shipping/trailering arrangements.
Asking price is $7000.00.
