I guess they figure that most people will be too embarassed to complain and since you are a tourist you won't be back every week. Besides, if you drink enough you won't care. When in Manhattan (NY), the rule of thumb (for less than wealthy people like me) is to look at the prices on the menu (put in the window) before you go into the restaurant. If they don't post the prices in the window the remember the old adage: if you have to ask "how much?" then you can't afford to eat here. For the finer establishments, do your research before you make a reservation.

As someone else said, I'm glad I don't drink any more. While we're on this, how can you spend $3-5 for one pack of cigarettes? I remember buying a carton for $5-8 (name brand). The price of lung cancer has gone way up since I smoked.
