Good advice in your post (leave them alone and they'll leave you alone), but it doesn't sound like you're a "gun" guy.
While you'll have to have some "luck" with a charging bear (30 mph sustained I've heard), this will change a bear's mind. I'm not in bear country, but this what I carry when in Catamount country:
