BTW, I'm not a fan of synthetic oil on air cooled engines.
I'm not a fan either, but I thought VR-1 Racing is not synthetic? I'm looking at the bottle and the word "synthetic" is not written anywhere.. I'm pretty sure it's this one:
VR1 Racing 20W-50 - VR1 Racing - Valvoline

Btw on the long drive today, oil level gauge on dashboard (which I typically ignore) showed completely empty most of the time, which is what caught my attention in the first place.

My main concern would be the top end.. I guess my question is, is a seemingly leakless & smokeless but oil-guzzling 3.2L characteristic of an engine needing a top end? or would other indicators like constant leaks & smoke be more obvious "symptoms"?
