I "deep" clean mine at the end of summer. I typically don't cook out in the winter months so it might sits idle until warm weather.
By deep clean, I mean disassembling and scrubbing all parts.
Ours is an inexpensive Charbroil that we bought about 8 years ago. it still looks good but I will buy a new burner next year.
