Yes, no, maybe. Les Paul's first electric mock-up was called the log - for the very reason it looked "loggish".
I saw a youtube video a few months back that had the guy playing in view from basically the guitar neck up. You could see and hear him play different tunes/sounds. At the end, the guy videoing pulled out to reveal a neck and pickup mounted to a plank from a pallet.
No matter that they say, wood does change and make a guitars sound, but in the electric world, the body/neck material can be almost anything.
As for the video.. Was the guy playing? If you had closed your eyes and listened, could you tell a diff?

The 80's saw its fair share of synthetic material guitars. In the end, wood is best.
