I suspect the SW chip fattens the idle mixture to the point where it affects the ability of the rings to seal effectively.
I experienced the same situation when my 86 3.2 was running too rich due to a bad AFM which was solved when I had it replaced with a good used one that leaned out my idle substantially and solved my annoying oil smoking at idle issue and oil consumption at the same time.
