Copper tubing is really the way to go. Ignoring the cost, no threading, easy to repair and modify.

Some good reading: Compressed Air Piping

For those of you who have not seen failed PVC pipe, is is not a pretty sight. I had a PVC water line fail at work (100 psi). I found shards 40 feet away and they were small and very sharp.
