No one could do what they did. They were a jam band and really only wanted to do live stuff. The records were cut to fund the ability to play concerts.
Admittedly, the deadheads were cult-like in their devotion (present company included back in the 70's) but the Dead were able to weave musical jams that were incredible. At times, I could listen to a jam (that sounded totally spaced out to the casual listener) and hear the next 3 songs they were going to play.
Jerry was quoted as saying that "we just play rhythm and blues with a whole lot of weirdness mixed in"
