What cracks me up too is how righteously indignant folks get about their encounters with these folk. Hey - these scammers are busy everyday on craigslist and autotrader etc looking for suckers. They are easy to spot - always a deal too good to be true. Toyota Tacoma, Honda hybrid, Acura TL etc - usually their bait of choice. Usually there is a picture of an email address - always from a free provider like gmail or yahoo.
Just like how you can walk into any large city's downtown area and find plenty of folks with big sob storied for why you should give them some of your money. Or pick pockets or folks willing to bash out your car window to steal a GPS device or car stereo - same thing just moved over to the wild and wooly interwebs
