Some magazines are available electronically via Zinio. I get National Geographic, Road & Track and Octane on mine. I suspect that you could get Motor Trend, but I'm pretty sure Excellence is not yet available via Zinio. If you're curious, you can go to Zinio.com to see what they have.

On a standard Kindle (black and white), I think you are stuck with Kindle stuff and possibly PDF and ePub formats. So you can't get Nook books on the Kindle (but I don't know that you'd need to). The standard black and white kindle has a battery that lasts a LOOOOOONG time. I think they say it'll average a month.

The color kindle's battery won't last nearly as long. The color display uses power any time it's on where as the e-ink (black and white) only uses juice when you change pages.

If you root the color and install regular Android, you can run Kindle or Nook (and I suspect, but have never checked that Zinio is available for Android).

The iPad has access to the iPad book store, will play movies and music. There is also a Kindle app, a Nook app, and a Zinio App

If you want to read books, and you want something smaller and lighter than a paperback book, then I would recommend the black and white Kindle.

If you want a color experience (so you can get magazines) and you aren't afraid to tinker with PC like stuff (rooting Android is a linux thing, there are good instructions out there), then I'd probably recommend the color Kindle. I've heard that there are some functions of the color Kindle that aren't ready for prime time if you've rooted, but I don't keep up with that too much because I don't have one.

If you want to do more stuff (as much as with a color android device), but you don't want to mess with the OS (no rooting) then get an iPad.

I LOVE ANDROID. I would love to have an Android tablet. I got my iPad a year ago when there weren't really any good Android tablets. That's why I got the iPad. The iPad is really good. I have a bluray player. Some of the movies that I've purchased on Bluray had a "digital copy" that came with them. That means that I can legally rip the movies to iTunes. I then uploaded the movies to my iPad. I have a set of cables that allows me to play the movies from the iPad on any TV that's got RCA input. I have lots of books on my iPad, I have 3 magazine subscriptions on my iPad. I'm not afraid of rooting or jailbreaking but I just don't need to on my iPad.

It really comes down to what do you want to do. I think if you want to read magazines, then you will have to get a color device. If you're going to get a color device, do you want to mess with the OS or do you want to just plug it in and go.
