I have an article from 1987 - Cycle Magazine: Harley has a vision....They will sell new M/c that looks like old M/C's ....They will have gift shops and selling clothing, over-priced farkles, etc........Article is skeptical and ends on a note of: "We'll see how it goes"
We all know now it was a wildly successful business plan....As a life long sport bike rider, my helmet is off to them........
BUt, they have catered to the aging Yuppie.........Guess I'm one of those, so, we're a group that is getting too old to buy m/c's and most have had their ability to buy such toys sink with the stock market......
As a biker with their ear to the topsoil, we know that the sun has set in Milwaukee, a few years ago.....Harley is scrambling......A few yrs ago, they bought a factory in Italy to get into the small bike market......They sold right away.......Rather than sell Buell for $150 million, they folded shop and sent the dedicated workers walking.....Really Pi$$3ed off stockholders with that move!!!!!!
Now China? Is that the magic ticket in your world? China already produces more m/c's and scooters than you can shake a stick at. I've ridden a few and they are junk. Smart people reject them. What makes you think that they will be better with the Hd name? That country makes Chitty copies of Buick's, Apple software, sheetrock and any thing else you can name.......I wouldn't put a dime in HD stock.....They are the company that still has pushrods, air-cooled motor's and other 1940's tractor technology..........YMMV
