Honestly if you have till xmas I would wait for the Ice Cream Sandwich based tablets to pop up. Or see if google release it with support for legacy hardware. I'm hoping for that one.
google are aggressively trying to fix the fragmentation issue which can be significant depending on the device you buy.
My daughter turned 11 this past Thursday. If I had to buy her something today I would get the Nook Color and root it.
I prefer the 7 in size, just easier to handle and manipulate. 10' tabs to me are cumbersome. Again that's my preference, YMMV.
Android has lot of promise but up till 3.0 it was only "ok" on tablets. Great for phones but did not scale up that well.
