It is difficult but you start with something easier and go from there.
I bought an arc welder (stick) more than 20 years ago and I taught myself. Made in Italy and from memory it cost me about $120. It's paid for itself many time s over.
The one thing that improved my welding more than anything else was the purchase of an auto dimming welding mask.
Just start your weld and the thing dims as soon as there's and arc. You can see were the material is going and adjust as needed.
It lets you focus on the welding rather than worry about getting welding flash and it frees up your left hand.
