When I moved from San Francisco to St. Petersburg, FL 12 years ago my first job paid me about the same that I paid in TAXES in San Francisco... And I actually was better off at the end of the month...
Again, it's all relative... BTW - I live in a waterfront house on deep sailboat water. Care to guess how much a similiar house would cost on the West Coast? It's all about lifestyle and personal choices...
