Really? That's way less than starting salary for teachers around here with a bachelors (and TN is way below average in teacher salaries). Plus, they work 185 days per year, so even at 10 hours/day (generous) they're working quite a bit less than everyone else.

Average teacher salaries in TN (I had to look it up) are about $45k per year. Factoring in the 185 day thing times 8 hours per day, that's 1480 hours per year, vs 2080 hours for a regular, full time employee, so they are actually making 45,000/1480 = $30/hour or about $63k per year based on a 2080 hour man-year that everyone else works. Even at 10 hours per day, they are earning about $51k per year on average with lots of time off that the typical US worker only dreams of. Not too bad, if you ask me.

I'm not denigrating the teaching profession (I have kids in school and fully appreciate what teachers do), just injecting some reality into the pay discussion.
