I count at least twenty states with starting salaries under $30K. Bachelor degrees are most certainly a minimum qualification. Master's degrees are becoming almost mandatory. Yes, teachers have summers off. But the teachers I know seem to work quite hard during the school year, with lesson plans, grading papers, meeting with parents, etc. Plus, they have the frustration of dealing with kids whose lives are being screwed up by parents who should be shot in the head and left in the ditch. Their role in our society could hardly be overstated. I have the utmost respect. When I am crowned Emperor, these positions will be handsomely compensated.

My wife taught for 5 years in the NYC school system. Springfield Gardens to be exact. If you know where that is you know what she dealt with.
She just went back to work down here in TX. Both kids are in school so no need for her to be a stay at home mom any longer.
She has 3 degrees, Minor in Communications, BS in History, Masters in Early Childhood Education. She's accepted a gig as an aid in a special needs pre-school. She's out the door at 6:45 and home at 4:30 She'll make $15k for the year.
She's loving every minute of it.
