when i did my TR4, i kept the original engine. i did ditch the points and add electronic ignition. also, i rewired the rest of the harness (easy job on such a small car) and replaced most stuff with delco. over 30K miles on the car, and not a single hitch.
even the leyland stuff wasn't bad, so long as it was maintained properly. most people who diss it have never owned one, or the one they had was abused.
