My HUGE mistake was reading and responding to some of the politico/religio posts here before PARF was created. My even HUGER mistake was then continuing to read and respond to them on PARF.
I make it a point to generally avoid discussing politics and religion with people I know and absolutely won't discuss those topics with people I've never even met.
Stupidly, I violated my own rules and now, through no fault of anyone but myself, I have this reprehensible addiction to PARF, where rancor rules, attempts at intelligent discussion quickly turn into undiluted vitriol and I learn things about people I'd rather not know...and I reveal to people things about myself that would best be left unrevealed.
So my advice to anyone who hasn't been there is, don't go there. It's MUCH nicer here, and you'll avoid having your perception of the nice people here, who also post on PARF, tainted.
