I inspected a couple of european motorcoaches in a similar fashion. I think they were all Lags, not that that matters. The carrier didn't have a lift or pit, but he did have a shallow ditch that went underground at the edge of the property (ditch into a culvert pipe). They drove the coaches over the top of the dry ditch, and I crawled underneath to do the inspections.
Weird, but quite safe.
