My personal challenge:
Must not go overboard with making it too nice.
Even if it cost nothing to begin with - I can easily see getting upside-down on making it mint.
Then, let the kids at it and ride it back to worse condition than it's in now....

I had one as a kid, and when I got it - it was in much, much worse shape than this one is. The seat was nothing but duct tape, the exhaust required a beer can to replace a rotted out section, and to my dismay I learned very late that the cam chain tensioner arm was basically gone. (It never was all that strong...)

I have higher hopes for this one.

By the way, the missing lever isn't all that important. Redundant cable for the rear brake.

I'm rambling. Hope to spend some time with the thing tomorrow. My little guy (5 1/2) has already been hounding me for a ride. Can't wait to see that smile!
