NO DRILLING ANYTHING everything your buying is a direct replacement.Lord are you ever getting mixe up here(Please peoples keep it simple so the man can replace his shifter one of the most simple job to DIY on any 944).Are you telling me that "C" clip is missing on the shift lever (see pic) ? if it was the than boot/knob would have come out easily since that clip lock the boot/knob to the shift lever.If so and you can't find it anywhere else order one from Auto Atlanta - Porsche Parts and Accessories part#477-771-269 prize at $1.55, lol I hope someone don't come on and find that part expensive & tell you to lock it with a piece wire
