What series are you looking for? I'll assume a 996 (1999-2004). The later C4 has the sexy wide hips but unless you need four wheel drive for the winter time, I would skip it. Your price range should find you a very nice car.
As you said, the best thing you can do is get a PPI. If you haven't already do some research on IMS bearing, RMS leaks, etc. (do a Google search on "996 engine failure"). Don't let everything you read scare you off, just educate yourself on what your looking for.
I'm an aircooled owner but hope to get a 996 sometime next year. Good luck in your search!
