That depends. This type is highly directional, and will typically not give a uniform light in a lamp designed for a standard bulb, and instead show a spot or a dotted pattern:



The designs with LEDs on the side, however, emits light in a way that somewhat resembles a conventional bulb, and gives a nice, uniform illumination:



(I say "resembles", because although this lamp does emit light mostly to the sides, just like a conventional bulb, it is not from a single point (the filament), so the light from the reflector will be less focussed. For some applications, that is acceptable.)
