The other alternative (though it doesn't work well for out-of-town guests) is having the ceremony in Synogogue on day (Saturday morning), and then hosting the reception/dinner on the next night. It seems like a fair number of Bar/Bat Mitzvahs here in LA are done that way. Of course, the events are more luxurious than most weddings, but that's another story.
