I have the same noise in my '05 2.7 Boxster with 18K miles. My local dealer shop foreman listened to it and immediately remembered a Technical Bulletin from Porsche (dated 03/06 Number 1349) about bad crankshaft bearing housings causing this noise. The regional service manager was consulted and he said it is not dangerous and nothing has to be done, but I'm not comfortable with "living with it" I plan to persue a repair/rebuild.
